UT Biology professor, Bridgette Froeschke, aided by some of the students in her lab, presented on her ongoing work examining the pervasiveness of staphylococcus and MRSA in the Tampa Bay area (not just the bay but also in the Hillsborough River). She found that it MRSA – the antibiotic resistant strain of staphylococcus – is found in a number of locations around Tampa, particularly in the drainage pipe of Tampa General. Avoiding the rivers and staying out of the ocean when you have open cuts and wearing foot protection when you do get in those bodies of water is highly recommended to avoid contracting an infection.
