NCHC: Kansas City, MO 2024
The UTampa Honors Program attended the National Collegiate Honors Conference (NCHC) in November, 2024. NCHC is the governing body that determines what constitutes Honors at most universities and is the largest convention of Honors students. Featuring panels for both Honors administrators and students, it features interdisciplinary research at all levels. Lena Malpeli gave a paper on the letters of Vita Sackville-West, and the Drs. Tillman and Rukholm presented a poster on ACE points. Honors Executive Council members also often attend for leadership enrichment and to garner new ideas about activities in Honors. And, of course, we made time to try the local Kansas City barbecue, which did not disappoint (even the Texans on the trip, who have very high standards for such things).
Anyone can present at an Honors conference, and the next one is the Southern Regional Honors Conference March 26-29, 2025 in Chattanooga, TN. Students can apply to present a paper or poster here by Dec 6, 2025. Honors pays for flights, hotels, meals, and, if able, we also usually make time for something fun to see in the city, as well; the directors attend this conference, too, so it’s a good experience for people looking to build their resume and get comfortable sharing their work with a supportive undergraduate interdisciplinary scholarly community. It’s a great opportunity for thesis students to present their nearly-finished work, and all it requires is an abstract, which is usually a very short (250 or so word) paragraph that says what the paper or poster will be about. Consider applying today!
Hocus Pocus at Sparkman’s Wharf

The Honors Executive Council, the student governing body for Honors, recently planned a night out at Sparkman’s Wharf to watch Hocus Pocus in the lead-up to Halloween. The event was planned by excursions co-chairs Thomas Simonetti and Alyssa Westcott, who hoped the event would provide a much-needed break from the rigors of academic life mid-semester.
